7 Tips for First-Time Safari Travelers.
Going on a safari is a dream trip, but the first time can feel overwhelming. You may ask yourself these questions: What should I pack? When should I go? What will it be like? We all have survival instincts that keep flaring when we think of visiting new places – yes, places where we’re just visitors (or strangers). But with our simple, smart tips, even first-timers can feel fully prepared. In this article, we’ll unveil 7 insider tips for first-time safari-goers. Let’s explore them.
1.  Pick the right time of the year.
Before we advise you on the perfect time to visit Tanzania, let’s first know your interests. Are you going to see animals or birds? Maybe you want to witness the Great Migration or climb Mount Kilimanjaro. Tanzania is a year-round destination, but some months offer a different experience depending on your interests.
For instance, June through October is the right period for game viewing, climbing Kilimanjaro, and witnessing the wildebeest migration river crossings. However, most northern parks are crowded during this period, which may drive prices up. To avoid this, you can visit lesser-crowded spots like Ruaha and Nyerere in the far south. January to early March is also the right time to watch animals, birds, and climb Mount Kilimanjaro without prices going sky high.
2.  Pick the right parks for you.
Everyone has interests – some in watching animals, others in climbing, etc. So, you’re the one who should decide on which parks to include in your itinerary. If you want to trek the wildebeest migration, then go to the Serengeti. This dramatic event happens every year – wildebeest and zebra herds move from the southern plains to the north. The Serengeti is also the best place to see big cats – lions, leopards, and cheetahs, which are concentrated in the central part of the park.
For Big 5 sightings, visit the Ngorongoro Crater, where it’s so easy to spot them, especially the black rhinos. This enormous caldera is home to the largest concentration of wildlife, with more than 25,000 animals. The steep walls and misty highlands create a scenic backdrop, and for good reason, this crater is a hidden gem for many avid photographers.
3.  Pack smart, but simple.
The common mistake first-timers make is overpacking and bringing the wrong items. We recommend packing for both hot days and cold nights and mornings. Bring the right clothing, particularly for specific activities. To avoid the cold and insect bites, bring long sleeves and pants. Include simple, neutral-toned clothes, such as beige, khaki, and blue. There are colors to avoid bringing for your safari, including dark blue, black, and camouflage. We also recommend simple, breathable fabrics like cotton and linen instead of plastic and jeans. You may also require gadgets like binoculars and a good camera to elevate your safari experience.
4.  Follow your guide’s instructions.
Your guides know the wilderness very well. Trust them and obey what they say, even if it’s little instructions like staying quiet. Want to step out of the car? Ask them. Their instructions are meant for safety and a smooth safari experience. With your obedience to the guides, you’ll have a wonderful trip.
5.  Be patient and flexible.
Wildlife is indeed abundant in the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, Ruaha, and Nyerere. Be patient during game drives. Sometimes, you may drive for so long without encountering animals. On some days, you might spot rare sightings like a river crossing on the mighty Mara River. And some days can be quiet. And others filled with the views of big cats or birds. Patience will always reward you with dramatic scenes.
6.  Respect wildlife and the environment.
We sometimes feel a bit selfish – always wanting to see wildlife at the expense of wildlife or the environment. However, while you’re viewing wildlife, keep in mind that you’re just a visitor in their home. No loud noises, no feeding animals, no littering. Always keep a safe distance (at least 30 meters) from animals.
7.  Choose the right place to stay.
The place you’re going to stay can make your safari incredible or worse. Always stay in an accommodation that reflects your values. This depends on your budget and experience. You can stay at eco-friendly lodges and camps. And you will stay in luxurious camps, particularly those found in private concessions.
A safari is exciting, safe, and life-changing if you prepare well. As you craft your itinerary, make sure to include unplanned moments. With these tips, your safari will be magical as you imagined. Our guides are here to help you plan this adventure.
