Beach safaris in Tanzania.

If you’re going to Tanzania, chances are, you’re visiting the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, or Mount Kilimanjaro. But here’s a unique adventure worth adding to your safari itinerary – it’s a beach vacation or simply a beach safari. This East African country is adjacent to the azure blue Indian Ocean, and more importantly, the ‘Spice Islands’ of the Zanzibar Archipelago are part of this beautiful country. Here, you will find some of the finest beaches – the ones that will make you think you’re in the Caribbean.

What is a Tanzania beach safari?

This is a calm, relaxing adventure on the finest, white sandy beaches off the Indian Ocean. After watching river crossings in the Serengeti or ticking all the Big Five in the Ngorongoro Crater, it’s time to indulge in a peaceful beach holiday. Sometimes, you don’t have to necessarily visit these destinations before going to Zanzibar. You can just fly directly to this idyllic archipelago, but a combination of a safari and a beach holiday is unforgettable. If you want a perfect escape, you can try the freshwater beaches of Lake Victoria and Lake Tanganyika.

Beach destinations in Tanzania.

Tanzania is almost completely ringed by water—the Indian Ocean to the east, Lake Victoria to the north, Lake Tanganyika to the southwest, and Lake Nyasa (Malawi) to the south. All these have exquisite beaches worth a vacation. Here are some of the best beach destinations.

Zanzibar.

Zanzibar is a 30-minute flight from Dar es Salaam, Tanzania’s business capital. It’s known for peaceful beach holidays, immersive cultural adventures, and countless events and festivals. Hats off for its pristine beaches – from famous spots like Nungwi and Kendwa to little-known beaches like Kizimkazi and Jambiani

If you’re after some real buzz, head to Kendwa or Nungwi beaches. The tides here hardly get in the way, so you can swim any time of day. Plus, the nights are just as lively as the days—think beach bars, music, and even the famous full moon party at Kendwa Rocks Hotel. For seasoned divers, head out to the beaches in the southern tip of the island. High tides add a thrill to kite surfers, deep-sea divers, and swimmers. Jambiani, Kizimkazi, and Michamvi beaches are tidal, hence perfect for seasoned divers, not beginners.

Looking for small, private islands in Zanzibar? We’ve got you covered. Mnemba, Chapwani, Bawe, and Chumbe stand out as our best options. Each has exclusive-use properties, pristine marine life, thriving corals, and everything a luxury traveler could wish for.Beach safaris in Tanzania.

Pemba.

Pemba is a quiet option, the perfect alternative to Zanzibar, which may sometimes be crowded. This island is a 30-minute flight north of Zanzibar. The green landscape and large spice plantation make Pemba look green, creating a scenic backdrop perfect for every photo. There are thriving corals, rich marine life, and secluded beaches, worth seeing on a diving trip.

Mafia Island.

Mafia is an idyllic island in the south of Zanzibar. It’s an interesting spot if you want to swim with the whale sharks, dolphins, and other marine species. The giant Rufiji River flows into the Indian Ocean near this island. The water contains plankton, which is nutritious to many marine species. From November through February, over 200 whale sharks gather around Mafia Island. Apart from marine species, Mafia has soft, powdered sand ideal for beach holidays.

The Mainland Coast.

If you want to avoid Zanzibar, opt for the mainland coast. There are public beaches like Coco Beach, where you will find the vibe and energy of the people of Dar es Salaam. You can set off for a beach excursion to remote islands like Mbudya and Bongoyo for a half-day trip. Or stay in private islands like Fanjove (15-minute flight south of Dar es Salaam) and Thanda (near Mafia Island).

When to go for a beach vacation in Tanzania?

Plan it at the wrong time, and your dream beach trip to Tanzania could be ruined. Optimal weather conditions often prevail from June to October. This time is perfect for diving due to clear visibility under the sea. In addition, you relax on the sun-kissed beaches without getting interrupted by short, unpredictable rainfall. For the case of Zanzibar, the dry season comes in with plenty of local and international festivals. The only downside is the large volume of visitors, which, as a result, drives prices up.

January to February is also great for beach stays in both Zanzibar and the Mainland Coast. Fewer visitors pay visits to Zanzibar during this time. Which means you will not only enjoy seclusion in the top beaches (Kendwa and Nungwi) but also see the value of your money. The only downside is high temperature rise, especially in February when it rises to even 34˚C (93˚F).

Picture yourself diving deep to view healthy corals, playing with clever dolphins, or swimming with whale sharks in Mafia Island.
