Best Time to Go on a 10 Days Ultimate Rwanda – Uganda Safari

  • June to September – Prime Gorilla Trekking & Best Wildlife Viewing

This long dry season is considered the optimal time for a combined Rwanda–Uganda safari. Trekking conditions in Volcanoes National Park, Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park are at their best, with trails remaining firm, vegetation thinner, and visibility higher. Wildlife viewing in Queen Elizabeth and Akagera National Park also peaks at this time, as animals gather at water sources and grasslands stay open. Clear skies and cool temperatures create stunning conditions for photography and game drives.

  • December to February – Excellent Primate Encounters & Beautiful Green Scenery

This short dry season is another highly recommended period for cross-border gorilla and wildlife safaris. Although landscapes appear greener than in the long dry season, trekking conditions remain favorable and wildlife activity is consistent. This is also an excellent time for chimpanzee tracking in Kibale Forest and Nyungwe Forest, with primates remaining active and visible. Birdwatching becomes exceptional due to the presence of migratory species across wetlands, forests, and savannahs. Fewer crowds also ensure a calmer trekking experience.

  • March to May – Long Rains & Low Visitor Numbers

This rainy season brings heavier showers across both countries, making forest trails muddy and requiring more physical effort during gorilla trekking. Some game drive routes may become slippery in Queen Elizabeth and Akagera. However, this period rewards travellers with dramatic cloud formations, intensely green landscapes, quieter national parks, and lower lodge rates. Photographers who appreciate moody, misty mountain scenes find this season especially rewarding. Gorilla trekking continues year-round in both Rwanda and Uganda, even during the rains.

What to Pack for a 10 Days Ultimate Rwanda – Uganda Safari

Clothing

Lightweight, neutral-coloured clothing—such as khaki, beige, olive and light brown—is recommended throughout the safari to blend naturally into forest and savannah environments. Long-sleeved shirts and trousers help protect against insects, thorny vegetation, and sun exposure, especially during treks in Bwindi, Volcanoes, Kibale, and Nyungwe. A warm fleece or jacket is necessary for early mornings at high elevations, where temperatures drop significantly. Sturdy, waterproof hiking boots are essential for gorilla trekking, paired with long socks to tuck trousers in for added protection. A wide-brimmed hat and UV-blocking sunglasses improve comfort during game drives in Akagera and Queen Elizabeth National Parks.

Gear & Essentials

Binoculars are invaluable for game drives in Queen Elizabeth and Akagera, where animals may be spotted at a distance. A good camera with extra batteries, lenses, and memory cards is essential for capturing fast-moving primates, scenic volcano backdrops, and savannah wildlife. A reusable water bottle ensures constant hydration during trekking and drives. Sunscreen, insect repellent, and a pair of gardening-style gloves are practical items for gripping vegetation during gorilla treks. A waterproof daypack protects electronics and essentials during rainy or misty conditions.

Travel Essentials

A valid passport with the necessary Rwanda and Uganda entry visas must be arranged in advance, with the East Africa Tourist Visa being a convenient option for multi-country travel. Travel insurance—especially covering trekking activities—is strongly recommended. Yellow Fever vaccination certificates may be required depending on your travel route. Guests should pack personal medication, altitude-related remedies, a basic first-aid kit, and any prescriptions needed for the entire trip. Carrying local currencies (Rwandan Francs and Ugandan Shillings) or reliable cards ensures smooth transactions for tips, souvenirs, and lodge extras.
