Wildlife in Congo
The Democratic Republic of the Congo is one of the gifted places on planet Earth, a land of expansive rainforests, mighty rivers, and ancient volcanic mountains. A Kingdom of Biodiversity
After Amazon, The Congo Basin is the second largest tropical rainforest in the whole world. It covers more than 1.5 million square miles providing habitat for over 400 mammal species, 1,000 bird species, 700 species of fish, insects, reptiles, and plants
DRC’s biodiversity is one of the top five most biologically rich countries on Earth. Its ecosystems include dense rainforests, savannahs, swamps, alpine meadows, and volcanic highlands all teeming with life.
2.Wildlife of the Congo
Mountain and Eastern Lowland Gorillas
These endangered gorillas are most found in the Virunga National Park, Africa’s oldest UNESCO heritage site. In the east, Kahuzi-Biega National Park gives shelter to the eastern lowland gorilla, the largest of all gorilla subspecies and found nowhere else in the World.
Okapi
The Okapi also knows as the “forest giraffe,” it is a unique striped mammal found only in the Congo’s Ituri Forest. A symbol of the country’s stunning wildlife, it is attractive to sight, so rare that many locals once thought it was mythical.
Forest Elephants
Smaller and more secretive than their savannah cousins, forest elephants wander in the Congo Basin’s dense jungles, playing a crucial role in seed distribution and maintaining forest health hence conserving the environment.
Bonobos
Also known as one of the closest cousin, Congo is the only home of the bonobo. These peaceful great apes, known for their intelligence and social harmony inhabit the forests south of the Congo River.
Other Species
Leopards, chimpanzees, bongo antelopes, and countless birds like the Congo peafowl—thrive here, each contributing to the region’s ecological magic.

National Parks and Protected Areas
Virunga National Park: Africa’s first national park, famous for gorillas, volcanoes, and active lava lakes.
Kahuzi-Biega National Park: A sanctuary for eastern lowland gorillas and montane forests.
Salonga National Park: The largest tropical rainforest reserve in Africa, home to bonobos, forest elephants, and rare birds.
Garamba National Park: One of Africa’s oldest reserves, known for elephants, giraffes, and lions.
These parks represent some of the world’s most important strongholds for endangered species.
