Detailed itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Kigali
Upon arrival at Kigali International Airport, you will be warmly welcomed by your safari guide who will brief you about your upcoming adventure. Depending on your arrival time, you may take a short city tour of Kigali — visiting the Kigali Genocide Memorial, local craft markets, and the vibrant city center. Later, check into your hotel for dinner and an overnight stay in Kigali, preparing for the next day’s journey into the wild.
Day 2: Morning Breakfast & Transfer to Volcanoes National Park
After a delicious breakfast at your hotel, begin your scenic drive to Volcanoes National Park, located in Rwanda’s northern province. The journey takes you through beautiful rolling hills, terraced countryside, and small rural villages that reveal Rwanda’s natural charm. On arrival, check into your lodge nestled on the foothills of the Virunga Volcanoes. The afternoon can be spent relaxing or visiting the Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village for a glimpse into traditional Rwandan life and customs. Dinner and overnight stay near Volcanoes National Park.
Day 3: Gorilla Trekking & Transfer to Nyungwe Forest National Park
Wake up early for a hearty breakfast before heading to the park headquarters for a briefing on gorilla trekking rules and etiquette. Led by experienced guides and rangers, venture into the thick bamboo forests to find a habituated gorilla family. The trek can take several hours, but the reward is an awe-inspiring hour spent observing these majestic creatures in their natural habitat — an emotional and unforgettable experience.
After the trek, return to the lodge for lunch before embarking on a scenic transfer to Nyungwe Forest National Park in the southwest of Rwanda. The journey offers breathtaking views of Lake Kivu and the surrounding landscapes. Arrive in the evening for dinner and overnight stay in or near Nyungwe Forest.
Day 4: Chimpanzee Trekking in Nyungwe Forest
Begin your day with an early breakfast, followed by a thrilling chimpanzee trekking experience. Nyungwe Forest is home to one of Africa’s oldest and most pristine rainforests, teeming with biodiversity. Accompanied by rangers, you will follow the sounds of the chimps deep into the forest, where you can watch them play, groom, and swing from tree to tree. Later, enjoy an optional canopy walk suspended high above the forest — offering panoramic views and a unique perspective of this lush ecosystem. Return to your lodge for a relaxing evening surrounded by nature.
Day 5: Scenic Drive Back to Kigali
After breakfast, set off on a picturesque drive back to Kigali. Along the way, enjoy the breathtaking vistas of Rwanda’s rolling hills and coffee plantations. Depending on your flight schedule, you may stop at local markets or the Ethnographic Museum in Huye to gain deeper insight into Rwanda’s culture and history. On arrival in Kigali, your guide will transfer you to the airport for your departure flight — marking the end of your memorable 5-day primate safari adventure.
